About

Carrick Editorial was started as a way to help authors get their work ready for publishing.

Professional Bridget

I have been running Carrick Editorial since 2016. I focus on editing, proofreading, and design work for books, journals, and blogs.

Before going back to school for my master’s degree in book publishing, I worked in marketing for five years, focusing on content writing and crafting.

As I tried on different marketing hats, however, I soon found that I could be useful elsewhere. Instead of writing how-to articles or designing marketing materials for someone else’s company, I decided to help communicators, leaders, and artists directly.

Before working for myself as an editor full time, I also taught writing courses at Portland State University. As I worked one on one with my students, challenging them to be better writers (and learning a thing or two myself), I knew I wanted to help more writers and researchers with their work.

Professional Development Bridget

I’m a member of Editorial Freelancers Association, ACES: The Society for Editing, American Society of Business Publication Editors, the Northwest Editors Guild, and the Freelancers Union. I follow the Conscious Style Guide as well as several editor- and writer-themed professional groups so I can stay on top of new trends and discussions.

The style guides I’m most familiar with are Chicago (CMoS), APA, and MLA. I like to keep up with books on writing, grammar, storytelling, design, client relationships, and other topics related to my work. I’ve lost hours flipping through Garner’s Modern English Usage.

Extracurricular Bridget

After I step away from the computer and my red pen for the day, I like to get outside—walking, biking, hiking, or backpacking with my spouse. If I’m indoors, I’m probably reading, crafting, or knitting while my cats, Puck and Pangur, snooze beside me.

My bookshelves and Libby virtual shelf are peppered with a wide array of genres, mostly literary fiction, nonfiction on random topics, and fantasy adventures. I’m a sucker for philosophy, personal growth, and psychology books and articles as well.
